Duro-Last® earns sustainability certifications

Duro-Last Inc., Saginaw, Mich., has announced its single-ply roof membranes received certifications under the NSF American National Standard for Sustainable Roofing Membranes—NSF/ANSI 347. NSF/ANSI 347 is the standard used for evaluating and certifying sustainable attributes of single-ply roof membranes during their lifecycles.

Certification awarded in 2016 for Duro-Last's single-ply membranes in 40-, 50- and 60-mil-thick options was renewed. The certification also was expanded to include the Duro-Last Rock-Ply® and Shingle-Ply® Designer Series membranes. In addition, certification for Duro-Last's reflective white Duro-Tuff,® Duro-Fleece® and Duro-Last EV membranes was renewed and expanded to include all colors for Duro-Tuff and Duro-Fleece, as well as the Duro-Fleece Plus® membrane.

"Sustainable products and practices have been a priority at Duro-Last for over 20 years," says Katie Chapman, sustainability specialist for Duro-Last. "These certifications help drive our efforts to enhance sustainability within our company and throughout the industry, and keep us accountable as we continue to grow our products and services."

3M® and Atlas® Roofing partner with Mike Holmes

Holmes

3M and Atlas Roofing have partnered with TV host Mike Holmes to name shingles with 3M's Scotchgard™ Protector HOLMES Approved Products. Atlas Roofing will prepare marketing tools for its roofing contractors to use while explaining the product's benefits to homeowners.

Invented by 3M to help prevent black streaks on roofs caused by algae, Scotchgard Protector's copper-containing roofing granules have been successful on homes during the past two decades. Based on the shingles' performance, Mike Holmes' international brand, The Holmes Group, now will recognize shingles with Scotchgard Protector as HOLMES Approved Products.

"I'm proud to partner with 3M, and I'm excited to see how far we can take the message," says Holmes, a professional contractor and TV host on HGTV and DIY Network. "Together, we're going to continue to improve the quality of our homes, increase the value of our homes and change our industry for the better."

The Holmes Group also will partner with two Atlas PRO™ Plus contractors to transform homes in need of a curb appeal facelift this fall. Led by Mike Holmes Jr. and Sherry Holmes, the teams will work together to make-over two homes with Atlas Pinnacle® Pristine Shingles with Scotchgard Protector. The project will be available for viewing as an online micro-series later this year.

TAMKO® Building Products Inc., Joplin, Mo., partnered with NRCA member Aspen Contracting Inc., Lee's Summit, Mo., to provide roof systems to three homeowners in need through Aspen Contracting's Covers 4 Others program.

Every year, Aspen Contracting invites the public to nominate deserving members of their community to receive free roof systems. Past recipients have included military veterans, first responders, underinsured homeowners and homeowners who have experienced hardships. In September, Aspen Contracting workers installed new roof systems donated by TAMKO Building Products on the homes of Terry F., a single mother in Springfield, Mo.; Charles T., a longtime community volunteer in Grandview, Mo.; and Beatrice G., a widow recovering from a heart attack who lives in Denver.

"It's a good day when we can provide some hope and help ease the burden of people in the middle of difficult circumstances," says David Humphreys, president and CEO of TAMKO Building Products.

In addition, TAMKO Building Products provided financial and flight support this year for U.S. veterans making Honor Flight trips through Central Missouri Honor Flight, one of 131 hubs in the Honor Flight Network. The Honor Flight Network is a nonprofit organization of volunteers that help transport veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials dedicated in honor of military members' service and sacrifices. Since 2005, more than 200,000 veterans have visited war memorials through the program.

AGC Charities donates for hurricane relief

AGC Charities Inc., a charity of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of America, is distributing $100,750 in donated funds to 65 construction workers in Puerto Rico to help cover losses the workers incurred because of Hurricane Maria. Each worker will receive a check for about $1,550.

"Contractors may do hard work, but they have soft hearts, especially when it comes to helping some of their own," says Dirk Elsperman, AGC of America's national senior vice president and executive vice president and COO of St. Louis, Mo.-based Tarlton Corp. "These checks won't make everything right, but they will help these construction professionals get their lives back on track."

AGC Charities organized a nationwide fund-raising campaign in the wake of Hurricane Maria to help provide grants for employees of member firms affected by the storm. Elsperman notes the charitable group received an "overwhelming" response. Dozens of construction firms, individuals and association chapters contributed to the effort. The AGC of Houston was the largest single donor, providing $50,000 for victims of Hurricane Maria, as well as another $50,000 for victims of Hurricane Harvey. Other significant donors included the AGC Oregon-Columbia Chapter, the Associated Contractors of New Mexico and the General Contractors Association of Hawaii.

Elsperman presented several checks in person while visiting the AGC of Puerto Rico's annual convention Aug. 26. The remaining checks are being mailed directly to recipients.

RICOWI releases hurricane report

The Roofing Industry Committee on Weather Issues Inc.'s (RICOWI's) board of directors released an investigation report Sept. 23 regarding the impact of Hurricane Irma.

After Hurricane Irma made landfall Aug. 30, 2017, RICOWI's Wind Investigation Program (WIP) Committee deployed volunteer hurricane wind investigators to inspect roof systems impacted by the hurricane. WIP's mission is to investigate the field performance of roof assemblies after major wind storm events, factually describe roof assembly performance and modes of damage, and formally report results of investigations and damage modes for substantiated wind speeds. The wind investigation team members included expert wind engineers, roofing material specialists, insurance analysts, structural engineers and consultants.

The program places experts in the field who have the required product knowledge and program training to ensure sound, scientific and unbiased reporting occurs. The reports generated by RICOWI investigation teams are used to help educate roofing professionals, improve products and installation techniques, increase safety and reduce overall roofing and insurance costs for the roofing industry. The results also are a valuable source of post-storm information for the Federal Emergency Management Agency and state emergency management agencies.

"This is an important undertaking by the report writers and team members," says David Balistreri, chairman for RICOWI. "As always, the uniqueness of research reports from RICOWI is the ability to produce an unbiased factual report."

RICOWI has conducted five of the most comprehensive roofing investigations of hurricane-stricken areas: Hurricanes Charley (Aug. 13, 2004), Ivan (Sept. 16, 2004), Katrina (Aug. 29, 2005) Ike (Sept. 13, 2008) and a smaller investigation for Hurricane Irma.
