NRCA elects 2002-03 directors

NRCA elected its 2002-03 board of directors during its 115th Annual Convention and Exhibit in San Antonio. Terms will begin June 1.

The following were elected to three-year terms: Kevin Bechtel, president of Harold J. Becker Co., Dayton, Ohio; Richard Bondarowicz, vice president of Smart Roofing Inc., Chicago; Dane Bradford, president of Bradford Roof Management, Billings, Mont.; Dennis Conway, vice president of Commercial Roofers Inc., Las Vegas; Robert Daly Jr., president of Kaw Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc., Kansas City, Kan.; David Karel, president of Garlock-French Roofing Corp., Minneapolis; John MacKenzie, president of MacKenzie Roofing & Remodeling Inc., San Antonio; Robert McNamara, president of F.J.A. Christiansen Roofing Co., Milwaukee; James Myers, president of James Myers Co. RCMA holds annual conference

The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association (RCMA) elected its 2002 officers during its Annual Conference & EXPO held in Tucson, Ariz. Raymond T. Hyer III, vice president of sales and marketing for Gardner-Gibson Inc., Tampa, Fla., was re-elected president.

Other officers elected were as follows: vice president of long-range planning—Van Ripps, president of Palmer Asphalt Co. Inc., Bayonne, N.J.; vice president of member services—Richard Paradise, vice president and general manager of Imperbel America Corp., Kansas City, Kan.; and secretary-treasurer—Steve Hudak, president of KST Coatings Manufacturing Inc., Twinsburg, Ohio.

In addition, RCMA granted Raymond T. Hyer Jr., president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Gardner-Gibson, its Martin A. Davis RCMA Industry Leadership Award. The award is given annually to an individual who significantly has contributed to the roof coatings industry. Hyer has been involved with the industry for more than 30 years and RCMA since 1982.

Also during the conference, John R. Fields, CEO of Fields Co. LLC, Tacoma, Wash., was named the recipient of RCMA’s Industry Statesman Award. The award is given when considered appropriate by RCMA members. Winners must promote and advance the roof coatings industry through technical programs, regulatory or governmental affairs, research and publications. Fields is a long-time RCMA member and former president.

NRCA member passes away

William F. Hamlin Sr., founder of Hamlin Roofing Co. Inc., Garner, N.C., passed away Dec. 17, 2001.

In 1954, Hamlin founded NRCA-member Hamlin Roofing and Hamlin Sheet Metal Inc. He served as 1967-68 president of the Carolinas Roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors Association and received the association’s Gordon M. Waters Distinguished Service Award in 1976.

Hamlin is survived by his son, William F. Hamlin Jr., and daughter-in-law, Christine; brother, Charles; and four grandchildren.

Roofing company raises funds

NRCA member Burns & Scalo Roofing Co. Inc., Bridgeville, Pa., raised funds for the Sept. 11, 2001, tragedies by allowing the former Crafton Golf Club, future site of its corporate headquarters, to stay open during October 2001. Green fees collected during the month and $2,300 raised during a Burns & Scalo Roofing charity golf outing were donated to the Twin Tower Emergency Relief Fund.

In addition, Jack Scalo, president of the company, made a matching donation to the Crafton, Pa., fire and police departments.

Kentucky group elects officers

The Kentucky Roofing Contractors Association recently elected the following officers for its 2002-03 term: president—Rick Steinrock, president of American Roofing & Metal Co., Louisville, Ky.; vice president—Jim Ramser, treasurer of Highland Roofing Co. Inc., Louisville; treasurer—George Dawson, estimator for Roof Concepts Inc., Louisville; secretary—Bill Graves, vice president of Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal Co., Lexington, Ky.; and chairman of the board—Clayton Hensley, president of Hensley Guttering Inc., Louisville.

Centimark receives honor

Canonsburg, Pa.-based Centimark Corp. was honored as the 2001 Employee Giving Company of the Year by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The company was recognized for its promotion of and employee participation in annual fund-raising events, such as bowling and golf tournaments. The company also was recognized for sponsoring a century challenge in which a Centimark team walks, runs, bikes or swims 100 miles (160 km) in 100 days.

Centimark began supporting St. Jude’s charities three years ago and contributed more than $50,000 during 2001.

NRF launches initiative

The National Roofing Foundation (NRF), a separate but related educational and research organization of NRCA, launched a planned-giving initiative during NRCA’s 115th Annual Convention and Exhibit in San Antonio.

The initiative allows roofing industry members to make donations of property, such as land or a corporation, or liquid assets, including retirement assets or cash, to NRF at a time that is convenient to a contributor. The tax-deductible gift may be bequeathed in a will, established in a charitable trust naming NRF as beneficiary or other methods.

SPRI elects officers

SPRI elected its officers during its 20th Anniversary Conference held in San Diego.

The following were elected to one-year terms: president—John Clifton, vice president and general counsel for Carlisle SynTec Inc., Carlisle, Pa.; president-elect and secretary-treasurer—Paul Yurcich, market manager for construction at Canadian General Tower Ltd., Cambridge, Ontario, Canada; and vice president—Mike Ennis, senior development leader for The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich.
