Tecta America receives award

Tecta America Corp., Rosemont, Ill., recently was honored by the Building Owners and Managers Association's Orlando, Fla., chapter with The Outstanding Building of the Year (TOBY) award in the Earth category. The TOBY Awards recognize excellence in building management, operational efficiency, tenant retention, emergency planning and community impact.

Tecta America received the award for installing green and solar roof system components on the Vantage Point Commerce Park building in Sanford, Fla. The building houses the Tecta America Central Florida offices and supports a 40,000-square-foot roof structure engineered to maintain a vegetative roof system, photovoltaic (PV) system, and solar thermal and daylighting technology.

The 25-kilowatt PV thin film solar system provides up to 30 percent of the structure's electric power, and the 2,100-square-foot extensive vegetative green roof system contributes to the reduction of storm water runoff. A 1,000-gallon cistern also was put in place to collect and recycle rainwater used to irrigate the green roof system.

Tecta America installed a cool roof membrane with a solar reflectivity of 0.79, allowing the building to reduce its heating and cooling costs 20 percent. A domestic solar hot water system and prismatic high-performance daylighting skylights also were implemented to increase energy efficiency and savings.
