DaVinci Roofscapes recycles polymer scrap

DaVinci Roofscapes LLC, Lenexa, Kan., has announced it recycled more than 1.2 million pounds of polymer scrap during 2016. The company's record-setting recycling effort involved remolding more than 696,000 pounds of grinded scrap into starter tiles and transferring 567,000 pounds of scrap to an end-user who makes pallets, crates and totes.

DaVinci Roofscapes produces polymer slate and shake roofing tiles in dozens of standard and custom colors, and each time the manufacturing operation changes color, off-spec transition tiles are created. During the recycling process, transition tiles are separated by color, ground up and molded into starter shingles, which generally are unseen on the roof—preventing the tiles from ending up in a landfill.

ARMA releases EPDs

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) has completed a multiyear effort to develop five Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for asphalt roof systems. The new documents provide information for building and construction professionals to use to support environmental aspects of roof systems as part of sustainable building projects.

Architects and specifiers embarking on new green building initiatives need to validate the environmental aspects of the building materials they use. EPDs are used to provide environmental information and support the credibility of environmental claims. ARMA worked with thinkstep, a global sustainability consulting company with headquarters in Germany, and UL Environment to validate its most recent EPDs. The EPDs outline the environmental attributes associated with the manufacturing of various asphalt-related roofing materials.

The EPDs are available on ARMA's website, www.asphaltroofing.org.
